Energy efficiency of drive motors according to EU requirements

The current regulation on the energy efficiency of electric drives will be repealed and replaced by Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 laying down ecodesign requirements for electric motors and variable speed drives, effective July 1, 2021. The new regulations will then also apply to smaller motors with a power output between 120W and 750W.

MTF Technik has always offered very efficient drives.

Depending on the drive type selected, we use drives with a power output of 80W or more in our Multi-Tech conveyor belts. This is made possible by the use of highly efficient planetary gears, such as those used in the internal drives and drum motors. I-Tech small conveyor belts are typically equipped with motors with a power output of 90W. Our separating drums are equipped with motors with a drive power of 87W as standard, and the drive power of the separating attachments and multi-separators is 50W. These aforementioned drives have such low power that they are not even considered by the new regulation. If larger drives are used, they will be delivered with energy efficiency class IE2 or IE3 by the above-mentioned deadline at the latest – depending on the desired drive manufacturer.

Our aim has always been and remains to find the best possible and most energy-efficient overall solution for our customers. This means intelligent optimization of the entire drive train, from the drive control system—e.g., via a frequency converter, a switching device, or a higher-level controller—to the actual motor and gearbox, all the way to the low-friction design of the conveyor belt itself. Consistently reducing friction enables the use of lower drive power and also prevents abrasion and wear.
