Energy efficiency of the drive motors according to EU requirements

The currently applicable regulation concerning the energy efficiency of electric drives will be repealed and replaced with effect from 1 July 2021 by Regulation (EU) 2019/1781 laying down ecodesign requirements for electric motors and speed controllers. The new rules will then also apply to smaller motors with a power output between 120W and 750W.

MTF Technik has always offered highly efficient drives.

Depending on the chosen drive type, we use drives with a power output starting at 80W in our Multi-Tech conveyor belts. This is made possible by the use of highly efficient planetary gearboxes, such as those used in the internal drives and drum motors. The I-Tech small conveyor belts are generally equipped with 90W motors. Our separating drums are equipped with 87W motors as standard, while the separating attachments and multi-separators have a power output of 50W. These drives have such low power outputs that they are not even considered by the new regulation. If larger drives are used, they will be delivered with energy efficiency class IE2 or IE3, depending on the desired drive manufacturer, no later than the aforementioned deadline.

Our aim has always been, and remains, to find the best possible and most energy-efficient overall solution for our customers. This means intelligently optimizing the entire drive train, starting with the drive control – for example, via a frequency converter, a timing switch, or a higher-level control system – through the actual motor and gearbox, right up to the low-friction design of the conveyor belt itself. Consistently reducing friction allows for the use of lower drive power and also prevents abrasion and wear.
